Author Interview – Brian Bloom @BrianB_Aust

If you could do any job in the world, what would you do?

I’ve often wished I was better with my hands. When I was young I wanted to be a motor mechanic but my friends and relatives talked me out of that. I’m envious of Denise. She has magic hands. For example, she makes exquisite works of mosaic art. If I had the talent I might like to be a sculptor.

Are you a City Slicker or a country lover?

I can cope in the city but I love the country – in particular I love living near water.

How do you feel about self publishing?

In my view, the probability of some mainstream publisher actually publishing a work of seminal importance is pretty low. They don’t tend to take risks. We need to be brutally honest; self publishing has a very low probability of success but the probability of something seminally important coming out of self publishing is probably higher than from mainstream publishing. From a different perspective, one has to do what one is born to do. And if a publisher won’t take your work then go for it! What’s the worst that could happen? You’ll fail. And so?

In today’s digital age it’s more important you have a distributor than a publisher. Just make sure that you have the marketing angle covered and make sure that your book has a unique selling proposition – preferably it should be a shining example of literary originality and excellence in a world of bland sameness.

How important are friends in your life?

Genuine friends? Like gold! Acquaintances? I can take them or leave them.

How many friends does a person need?

Assuming that your spouse is your best friend, which mine is, maybe three or four. Quality trumps quantity every time.
